Greetings Friends of NeHC,
As we enjoy our final weeks of a very busy and hot summer, I wanted to share some highlights with you on National eHealth Collaborative’s (NeHC) major activities this year. NeHC is proud to serve as a multi-stakeholder collaborative forum to tackle barriers and accelerate progress toward widespread deployment of health IT and health information exchange (HIE) to improve health and healthcare. As you know, our programmatic focus is on three areas: consumer engagement, HIE, and health IT education. NeHC also recently kicked off a new membership program and is excited to partner with InfoComm International to host our Technology Crossroads Conference later this year.
NeHC Membership Program
NeHC launched a new membership program recently to provide a concrete mechanism for organizations and individuals to participate in, support, and help guide our major program areas, as well as have a voice in healthcare leadership discussions. NeHC brings value to its members’ core strategies by advancing knowledge through networking, education, and synthesizing critical information, and by providing a forum to participate in and contribute to important discussions among government and other industry leaders. We assist our members in determining what is most important to their current and future strategies and support those strategic and business efforts by providing an efficient and effective means of staying informed and engaged in industry changes and innovations and their implications.
We encourage all stakeholders to consider joining the NeHC membership program. For more information on specific benefits of membership and to apply, please visit http://www.nationalehealth.org/nehc-membership.
NeHC Consumer Consortium on eHealth
Since early 2011, NeHC has been convening the Consumer Consortium on eHealth, a forum for interested stakeholders to collaborate on a coordinated outreach effort to encourage consumer engagement in health IT. More than 300 diverse stakeholders are involved in the Consumer Consortium, and this year the focus of the Consortium has been on developing messages for target consumer audiences, developing a patient engagement framework, and gathering and disseminating best practices for consumer engagement in health IT.
We hosted the Consumer Consortium on eHealth Engagement Summit in Washington, DC on July 16. This was an action-packed day that brought together healthcare stakeholders from across the country to network, share, and brainstorm around the common goal of consumer engagement with health IT. The major theme of the day was that the consumer engagement movement is clearly underway. No longer is anyone asking whether or why consumer engagement is important, but rather, the focus is on how we can work together to make it happen. The Engagement Summit agenda included discussions and interactive activities on grassroots patient engagement programs, industry updates on patient engagement trends, and demonstrations of patient engagement solutions. Notable speakers included Leslie Kelly Hall with Healthwise, Lygeia Ricciardi from ONC, Dr. Danny Sands from the Society for Participatory Medicine, ePatient Dave DeBronkart, Richard Schwabacher with Quest Diagnostics, and many more.
We are excited by the enthusiasm we saw at the Summit and we are working to bolster that through our continued efforts. Soon we will be publicly announcing the Patient Engagement Framework and a corresponding Organizational Readiness Assessment tool. The Patient Engagement Framework defines the characteristics and phases of a fully patient engaged health system. It was developed with extensive stakeholder engagement and is mapped to meaningful use. It can be used as a guide for health systems, providers and others looking to move forward with a patient-centered health IT strategy. The Organizational Readiness Assessment is an interactive online survey tool that will guide health systems and similar organizations in understanding the characteristics and phases of a successful patient engagement strategy and will provide recommendations and resources to help them enhance their patient engagement efforts. Stay tuned for more information.
NeHC HIE Learning Network
At NeHC, we believe that widespread, secure HIE is essential to improving the quality and cost effectiveness of care. To that end, we have been working on several initiatives intended to accelerate progress and overcome barriers to robust, nationwide HIE. In late 2011 and early 2012, NeHC engaged 75+ industry leaders to review and contribute to the development of the Health Information Exchange Roadmap: The Landscape and a Path Forward. The Roadmap is a three-part whitepaper that provides an overview of the federal government’s efforts to encourage and enable HIE, highlights examples of market-based initiatives already underway, and recommends a path forward for organizations and communities seeking to advance HIE. The paper was released in April 2012 and has been downloaded by nearly 3,000 stakeholders.
The next step in NeHC’s ongoing work to identify and share critical success factors for HIE is our HIE Learning Network, which provides a collaborative forum to accelerate the advancement of HIE. The goal of the HIE Learning Network is to bring together diverse stakeholders to solve problems, develop and disseminate best practices, transfer knowledge and experience, create opportunities for networking and mentorship, and work to quantify and promote the concept and value of HIE. Approximately 450 leaders and interested stakeholders are participating in the HIE Learning Network workgroups:
These workgroups are meeting via teleconference for the next few months with the goal of producing whitepapers that provide a background and landscape of each issue and recommended best practices. The outcomes of the workgroups will be presented for discussion during our Technology Crossroads Conference on November 27-28 in Washington, DC.
NeHC University
NeHC University continues to grow and offer a wide range of high quality health IT and HIE related professional education programs. NeHC University’s total attendance has doubled every six months since its launch and now exceeds 13,000. The NeHC University audience remains very diverse, with participation from federal and state government, health information exchange organizations, health systems, health plans, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other clinicians, educational institutions, technology companies, consulting firms, health related associations, and others. Indicative of the high quality of NeHC University programs, nearly 90% of attendees have consistently rated NeHC classes “excellent or above average.”
NeHC University will be announcing its next set of programs very soon. The upcoming schedule includes a wide variety of new and continuing topics, including health IT orientation, best practices in HIE, consumer and patient engagement strategies, updates on ONC programs and policies, health IT innovation and big data, and careers in health IT. Watch for announcements of upcoming programs.
Technology Crossroads Conference
NeHC is joining forces with InfoComm International, the trade association representing the audiovisual industry, to co-host the Technology Crossroads Conference to explore the many ways in which cutting-edge AV technologies and health IT breakthroughs are working together to accelerate healthcare transformation. This conference will bring together thought leaders from all parts of the AV and health IT industries to network, learn and build solutions to some of healthcare’s most pressing problems. It will take place on November 27-28 in Washington, DC
Technology Crossroads speakers, panel discussions, case studies and technology demonstrations will examine the many uses of AV products and services in various healthcare settings, including telemedicine and telehealth, surgical video, mobile and personal connected health tools, remote patient monitoring, medical instruction and network security. Exhibitors will provide demonstrations of AV and health IT products and services and discuss new applications in the clinical environment.

**********
As you can see, NeHC has had a very busy year so far and we look forward to continuing this work with the engagement and support of our many stakeholders. We are always open to feedback about how we can improve our programs, so please be in touch with any thoughts or questions.
Warmest regards,
Kate
