Consumer Consortium 2012 Action Plan
Description
NeHC’s Consumer Consortium on eHealth in 2012 will create a two-track plan for collaboration and action to enhance consumer understanding of and engagement in the promise and potential of HIT.
The first track will involve working collaboratively with Consortium participants to reach agreement on basic key messages to effectively reach consumers via members’ communication vehicles, develop desired materials for refinement of participants, and develop tools and resources to support effective provider-patient engagement.
The second track will involve the creation of a framework for patient engagement with health IT that can be used as a guide for health systems, providers and other entities looking to create a patient-centered IT strategy. The Consumer Consortium Guide for Engaging Patients with HIT will describe the attributes of a successful patient-centered system as developed through research of relevant models and examples (e.g., Kaiser Permanente, Fallon Health, Bellin Health) and a roadmap for leveraging health IT and provider-patient engagement in health IT to improve health. This will serve as a model for organizations as they embark on strategies to more effectively engage with patients. Development of the framework will evolve from a review of relevant models and study of existing and emerging best practices.
