Health Information Exchange Learning Network

About the HIE Learning Network

The success of health information exchange (HIE) efforts nationwide can be greatly enhanced by the development and sharing of best practices and cutting-edge innovations.  Advancement of successful HIE is core to the National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) mission, so NeHC has established the HIE Learning Network to provide the ideal venue for facilitating the education and collaboration that is needed to fast-forward progress toward a widespread and integrated deployment of efficient and effective HIE.

NeHC has seen great success from its efforts to identify and educate stakeholders on critical success factors for sustainable HIE. NeHC’s HIE profiles report, Secrets of HIE Success Revealed: Lessons from the Leaders, its NeHC University Spotlight Learning Series on HIE Leadership and Sustainability – which highlights case studies of leading HIE-enabling organizations and hosts roundtable discussions with subject matter experts on challenging HIE issues – and its Roadmap for Health Information Exchange have been widely renowned across the health IT.  Leveraging the knowledge gained and relationships built as a result of NeHC’s HIE activities, NeHC hopes to capture and disseminate the key dimensions of success for HIE sustainability, provide insight and guidance for emerging HIEs, and contribute to the acceleration of national HIE.

The first phase of the NeHC HIE Learning Network will be to convene several workgroups aimed at building consensus on best practices that address some of the most common barriers to widespread HIE.  Based on the feedback we have received from nearly 400 of our stakeholders to prioritize among a longer list of potential issues, NeHC will organize workgroups on the following topics:

  • Business Models for Financial Sustainability
  • Best Practices for Prioritizing and Phasing Implementation of HIE Services
  • Addressing Variations in Implementation of Interoperability Standards
  • The Role and Function of HIE in Support of Accountable Care

We hope this effort will help accelerate progress toward successful and widespread HIE which will ultimately make an important difference in improving our lives as patients and consumers of healthcare.
